CHAPTER 14

Welcome to the Team

“I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that we’ve recently had an opening on the team.”

The witch was standing in her living room, speaking to the werewolf crouched in front of her couch. He was a tall, lithe creature, all legs and fur, less a wolf and more a giant greyhound. In the dim room, his jet-black fur almost seemed to drink the scant light, turning him into little more than a dark splotch with bright-yellow eyes.

“For the first time since we’ve started this little enterprise, some humans have stumbled into this place.”

The wolf growled.

“I’m as shocked as you. Mr. Crow was…well, a disappointment. I always had doubts about him, you know.”

The werewolf’s lips pulled back over his teeth as he snarled softly.

“When you’re right, you’re right,” the witch replied.

In the middle of the room, directly over the spot in the basement where Meg still sat, was the small, ornate wooden end table. The crystal bowl was still perched in the center.

“Hindsight is a powerful thing,” she said as she fished a blood-red handkerchief from a hidden pocket. The wolf growled once more. “I have a lot of creatures I can call on, but I believe you’d be especially adept at handling this…issue.”

The witch covered the bowl carefully with the handkerchief and closed her eyes, whispering a few words. The cane leaning in the corner opened its mouth like a fish sucking in water. A moment later, she removed the cloth. The bowl was filled with dozens of pieces of candy, neat little pucks about the size of quarters and perfectly wrapped in bright black-and-orange paper.

“Playing human for one night a year is good fun, but for a monster like you, I think I have something even better.”

Picking up the bowl, Serpa walked to the front door and opened it. The Skinless was standing on the other side, waiting patiently and holding a burlap sack. When it saw her, the odd little creature held the sack out.

“Distribute these,” she said, emptying the bowl into the bag.

The creature nodded courteously and waddled away. Before she could close the door, an identical little creature had taken its place, and it too smiled blankly as it waited for the bowl to refill. Ms. Vernon closed the door on it and returned to the living room, setting the bowl back in its place.

“There are four children in here with us,” she said. “I know where one of them lives. I’d like you to visit her apartment on the corner of Orville and Banner Street. It’s a brick building, three stories tall. I’m sure you’ll be able to find it.”

Her cane began to mumble softly, and Serpa held it to her ear.

“Oh, Henry,” she whispered. “I don’t think we need to do that.”

She turned her attention back to the wolf. “I’m sure you’ll find some family. Mother. Father. Maybe even siblings.”

She gave the cane a gentle kiss on top of its head. The face smiled.

“I’ve had so many disappointments in my life,” Serpa said to the wolf.
